Cleaning Vinyl Surfaces
In order to keep things looking nice around the home or office it is important to keep them clean. Apart from general tidiness, which is a must for maintaining a clean appearance most everything needs a regular washing, scrubbing or vacuuming to keep it in good condition and looking its best. These days many products are made of plastic. Cleaning plastic is something we all have to do, whether it is the casing on your hand mixer or a plastic chair, it needs to be washed occasionally and cleaning plastic really isn’t all that tricky.
One of the very common types of plastic is PVC or vinyl. It is used in many, many different products. It is a very good type of plastic because it is durable and inexpensive. Also, it can be combined with other ingredients to increase its softness or flexibility for different uses, so it is very versatile. You might find vinyl all around your house. Not just appliances toys and furniture, but flooring and upholstery are often made of vinyl. Surrounded as you probably are by this type of plastic, it is important to know how to clean and care for it.
Cleaning vinyl is quite straightforward for a number of reasons. It is very smooth and not very porous. This means it does not hold onto dirt or grime very easily. In most cases you can simply wipe away the dirt with a wet cloth. Another good thing about vinyl is that it is quite resilient. Most household cleaners will work well to clean it and few will cause damage. Among those that might damage the surface are abrasives, which will scratch into the plastic, especially if it is rubbed very hard, so be sure to avoid this.
Generally speaking, vinyl should simply be wiped clean when it becomes dirty. This can be done with a wet cloth or mop. If the dirt is dried or stubborn you can use a universal cleaner to help loosen the stain and remove it. You can use a spray or the type of concentrate you dilute in water. Simply wipe or rub the dirt away. With most cleaners you don’t really even need to rinse. There are some types of vinyl that may need a little extra care. For example, in older cars vinyl was commonly used for covering the seats. It is also used in the car interiors.
Because this vinyl is exposed to extreme temperatures and direct sunlight it is a good idea to condition it with a special vinyl conditioner that will make it last longer and keep it from drying and breaking or wearing. Cleaning vinyl is an easy thing to do. If there are stains you can find advice on how to remove them but otherwise simply wiping them down, careful not to scratch them will keep them looking clean and nice.
